ReefDex ("we", "our", "us") operates the ReefDex mobile application and website (reefdex.app). This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your information.
Account information: When you sign up, we collect your email address and display name via Google Sign-In or email/password authentication.
Photos: When you use the species identification feature, photos you take are sent to Google Gemini AI for analysis. We do not store your photos on our servers. Photos are processed in real-time and discarded after identification.
Location data: With your permission, we collect GPS coordinates when you log dives or use the dive site map. This data is stored with your dive logs.
Dive logs: Information you enter about your dives (date, location, depth, duration, species sighted) is stored in your account.
Usage data: We collect anonymous usage statistics to improve the app.
Your account data and dive logs are retained as long as your account is active.
You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account in the app, or by emailing us if you cannot reach the app. Deletion is permanent. Your profile, dive logs, photos, videos, comments, reactions and follows are removed, and database backups roll over within 30 days.
Species observations are the one exception. The record that a species was seen at a place and time is kept after deletion, with every link to your account removed, so it can no longer be traced back to you. These observations support open marine biodiversity research. If you want yours deleted as well, say so when you contact us and we will remove them.
Payment records are held by our payment provider, Stripe, for as long as tax and accounting law requires, and we cannot delete those sooner.

We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and server-side API key management.
ReefDex is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Contact us to exercise these rights.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
